[Korean Unnie] Hello in Korean: Informal, formal and honorific

learn korean hello

안녕 친구들!

In this video, we will learn how to say “hello” in Korean in three different ways: Informal, formal and honorific.

In speaking Korean, whether you use informal, formal or honorific differs according to which circumstances you are in or to whom you are talking. So it’s very important to know each expression if you don’t want to be in an awkward situation.

Okay, let’s start!

Informal: 안녕
You say 안녕 in a very casual situation, and with friends or people who are younger than you. 안녕 actually means “peace” like “Salam” in Arabic but Koreans use it to say hello. 안녕 can also be used for saying “bye”.
안녕~ 안녕!

Formal: 안녕하세요 / 안녕하십니까

You say 안녕하세요 in a more formal manner or to someone who you are not close with. Or someone who is older than you.
안녕하세요 literally means How are you but we don’t actually say that as a meaning of How Are You, we use it to say hello.
안녕하십니까 is even more formal than Annyeonghaseyo, but I wouldn’t recommend it, it’s not used in an ordinary situations.

Honorific: 안녕하세요 (with bowing)
There is not a specifically different honorific word for saying hello in Korean but you can pay more respect with bowing and saying 안녕하세요 at the same time when you are talking to seniors or want to show the most respect.
